Oliwa and Cistercians

This walk is perfect for taking a breath from the city of Gdansk in the lovely and green neighborhood of Gdansk Oliwa, full of flowers, green hills and trees. We will see the Oliva Cathedral and the former monastery, including the chamber, where the Treaty in Oliva was signed in 1660. This was a very important event, as it was the end of long-lasting Swedish-Polish war known in Polish history as “the Swedish flood”. We will learn about the history of the Cistercians who changed the destiny of these areas. We will listen to a presentation of Oliva organs, that, in the time they were built, were the biggest in the world.  Still today they surprise with the diversity of the tones.

We will walk in the Park of Oliva and will hike up to the peak (100.8 m above the sea) on the picturesque hill with amazing views of Gdansk and the sea!

 

We will learn:

  • why the cistercians built their monasteries in the wilderness

  • which tones can imitate the organ in Oliva and how many voices they have
